Reinhard Kauke

Reinhard Kauke was born on February 17, 1941, in a nice city in northern Germany.

Because of World War II and the turbulent years that followed, he did not have an easy childhood. His family's home was destroyed, forcing them to flee, and his father died the following year. Later, he and his mother settled in the new town of Wolfsburg, Germany (VW Plant). While still in school, he discovered a love of cooking through his classes, a passion that would remain with him throughout his life.

Far from home, he completed his apprenticeship as a cook at a great hotel in Bernkastel, Germany. Thanks to his exceptional performance, he finished his apprenticeship ahead of schedule.

Wanting to see the world, Reinhard sailed by ship to Ontario, Canada, the first stop on what would become a long and successful career in North America. From there he traveled through New York before continuing to the Bahamas, where he worked for several years. He loved both his work and exploring the beautiful islands during his free time. While there, he survived a serious scooter accident, an experience that reflected the resilience he carried throughout his life.

Later, he married his first wife, Heidi, and together they welcomed their daughter, Brigitte. After accepting an excellent position in Puerto Rico, he eventually settled on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. There he worked as executive chef at a beachfront resort before opening his own gourmet deli, where he shared his love of fine food with others. He enjoyed diving and fishing in the crystal-blue Caribbean waters in his little leisure time

Through his second wife, he later moved to Newberry, South Carolina, where he continued his career as a chef. He also purchased a home in the North Carolina mountains, originally as a vacation retreat. Because he fell in love with the beauty of the area, it eventually became his permanent home.

For many years, Reinhard served as head chef at the High Country Inn on Highway 105 in Boone, well known for its iconic waterwheel. Countless local residents enjoyed his delicious meals there. Before retiring, he concluded his culinary career at the Appalachian State University Conference and Convention Center.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Reinhard was an active member of the American Culinary Federation for many years. In recognition of his dedication and achievements, he was awarded the lifetime designation of Certified Executive Chef.

Reinhard was grateful for the many friendships he formed throughout his life and especially during his years in the High Country. He was determined and self-confident, honest and fair, humble, straightforward, and clear-minded until the very end. He had many interests, remained curious throughout his life, and always maintained close ties with Germany and with his German friends in the United States. He especially enjoyed spending time and sharing conversations with them, as well as with his many friends here in Boone.

A life well lived came peacefully to its close on July 26, 2026. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Brigitte, and her family in France; his brother, Michael, and wife, Ursula; his nephew, Christian, and his family; his niece, Kerstin; and other relatives in Germany. He also leaves behind his dear friends Ben and Carolyn of Zionville, his good neighbor Darlene, and many other friends whose lives he touched.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the nurses of Medi Home Health & Hospice in Boone for the loving care and compassion, they provided to Reinhard in his final days.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests in accordance with the deceased’s wishes memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
