Oscar Grady Danner, Jr., 93 of Boone passed away on October 17, 2023 at Glenbridge Rehabilitation.
Born April 6, 1930 in Boone, he was a son of the late Oscar Grady Danner, Sr. and Addie Presnill Danner. He graduated from Cove Creek High School, served in the United States Army during the Korean War, 1951-1953, during which he achieved the rank of Corporal. He worked at Southern Agricultural Insecticides, Inc. of Boone for 50 years, manufacturing insecticides. He was a member of the Boone United Methodist Church.
Mr. Danner continued his tradition of community service when he had a few other community members saw the growing need for emergency services across the county. Mr. Danner was one of the founders of the Watauga County Rescue Squad. He served as Captain for 17 years, was presented a Life Membership in 1978, recognized as the Squadsman of the year in 1980, and was awarded appreciation of 32 years faithful service 1961-1993. When asked about his and the others in Rescue Squad’s readiness, his answer was… “We may have to call in someone, but one way or another, we would get it done.”
Mr. Danner was presented an award for 23 years of Distinguished Service to the Boone Volunteer Fire Department in 1987.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lillian Hyatt Danner, his son Geoffrey Scott Danner and wife Kristie Cook Danner of Lexington, Grandchildren Wesley “Cole” Byland and wife Carmen, Dylan Scott Danner and Drew Chandler Byland, his brothers Houston Danner of Zionville, Terry Danner and wife Susan of Morganton, his sisters Betty Burleson of Boone, Barbara Cox of Deep Gap, Bettina Ward of Vilas and Diane Burchill and husband Monte of Simpsonville, S.C., Three great grandchildren survive.
He was proceeded in death by his parents. Also brothers Kenneth, Johnny and Harold.

The funeral will be Monday, October 23, 2023at 2:00 PM at Boone United Methodist Church, 477 New Market Boulevard, Boone, NC 28607.
Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens, Boone, NC.
Officiating will be Rev. Ed Glaize and Rev. Patti Connelly.
