Martha Elizabeth (Lord) Flick went Home to be with the Lord on January 22, 2024, just 24 days shy of her 99th birthday. She had always said that she wanted to live to be 100. Her passing was quiet and without any pain.
Martha was born February 15, 1925 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Jesse Logan Lord and Mary Louise (MacClain) Lord (Nonnie). She lived there until age 12 when the family moved to a 40 acre farm in Brazil, IN. In 1942 she graduated from High School and joined the Civil Service to help in the war effort building radio trucks. In 1944 she attended Indiana State Teachers College, later transferring to Purdue University where she graduated in 1948 with a B.S. in Home Economics. Two weeks later she married Russell Earl Flick and they lived in Toledo, OH and Brazil, IN before buying their first home in Terre Haute, IN. Five years later the family moved to Cartersville, GA for 10 years before moving to Greenville, SC in 1968. Martha and Russ were active Square Dance enthusiasts and Martha owned a Square Dance fashion business. In 1987 Martha joined and was active in the Daughters of the Nile, serving as Queen in 1994-1995. Martha was an active camper and Airstream Trailer owner, putting in many miles across the country. After spending 25 years part time, she became a full time resident of Linville Land Harbor, NC in 2006 where she was an active game enthusiast and for many years was known as “Bingo Boss”. She is remembered fondly by many residents there for her quick wit and easy smile.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Russell Earl Flick and a daughter, Barbara Edwards. Surviving were 2 daughters, Mrs. Randy (Susan) Hutchins of Linville Land
Harbor, NC, and Mrs. Barry (Nancy) Benson of Greenville, SC; 5 grandchildren: Wayne, Jennifer, Kimberly, Andrew, and Michelle; and 8 great-grandchildren.
Memorial graveside services will be conducted at a later date by The Daughters of the Nile.
In lieu of flowers Martha has requested your kind and generous donation to The Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 Ferris Rd., Greenville, SC 29605 or Banner Elk Christian Fellowship, 140 Woods Lane, Banner Elk, NC 28604.
Austin and Barnes Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the Flick Family.
