Lucy Marie Shook

Lucy McKinney Shook, age 83, a resident of the Foley Center in Blowing Rock, formerly of the Foscoe Community, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 19th.  She is now reunited with the love of her life, David “Dave” Shook and is resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

She was born in Avery County in the Powdermill community to William and Odie McKinney.

Lucy loved people and her community, and cared deeply for both.  Her career in nursing for over 40 years allowed her to care for many patients.  She loved kids and provided childcare for a number of children over the years.  Before her declining health she was an active member of Watauga Baptist Church, serving in many areas of ministry.  She was a member of the Foscoe Ruritan Club, Foscoe Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and Republican Women’s Club for many years.  She loved helping with the Grandfather Community Center “country breakfast” and was known as the “gravy lady”.  Lucy loved southern gospel music and would travel with Dave to many singing events, including numerous “Singing at Sea” gospel cruises with Templeton Travel.  She and Dave were huge supporters of Watauga High School athletics.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Shook, sisters Sue Duckworth, JoRita Wise and Anna Lee Shook.

Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Mike Shook and wife Brenda and Mark Shook and wife Amy; three grandchildren, Mason, Alexis and husband Tyler, and Jeffrey ; a special nephew, Seth Johnson; one sister Hazel Pyatt and one brother Ray McKinney, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends on Friday, September 22nd 6pm-8pm at Austin and Barnes Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, September 23rd at Watauga Baptist Church in Foscoe.
