Josephine Issacs Obituary

Mrs. Josephine Combs ‘Jo’ Isaacs, age 94, of Boone, passed away Monday morning, November 20, 2023 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.  Born January l4, 1929 in the Beaver Dam Township of Watauga County, she was a daughter of Robert Lee and Bertie Storie Combs.  Jo was a member of Forest Grove Baptist Church and retired as the manager of the Thrift Food Center in Boone.  She loved her family tremendously.  Even though Joe was wheelchair bound for more than 20 years, she lived an independent and fruitful life.  She was a historian by nature and enjoyed sharing her life story with everyone, and especially sharing facts of her three brothers’ participation in WWII.

 

Mrs. Isaacs is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, including those locally; nephew, Oliver Adams and wife, Linda, of Sugar Grove; and nieces, Margaret Hartley and husband, Rudy of Zionville, Sue Hagaman of Boone, and Ruth Gibbons and husband Roger, of Ronda.  A number of great nieces and great nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Gregory Paul Isaacs; five sisters, Eula Combs Norris, Ila Combs Weaver, Velma Combs Johnson, Laura Jean Combs McGuire and Kathleen Combs Moore; and five brothers, Robert Smith Combs, Rufus William Combs, John Rex Combs, Wiley Norman Combs and James Carlton Combs.

 

Celebration of Life services for Jo Isaacs will be conducted Sunday afternoon, November 26, 2023 at 1:30 at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Glenn ‘Butch’ Reese.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:30, prior to services, at Austin & Barnes.  Graveside services will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
