John Richard Bray

John Richard Bray, 77, of Vilas, North Carolina, passed away on August 24, 2026. 

Born on October 5, 1948, in Anderson, Indiana, John was known for his outgoing and warm personality. A true friend to all, a rare soul who never met a stranger and made everyone he encountered feel seen and valued.  

John was an Air Force veteran, electrical lineman, and small business owner. If you met him, you quickly learned about his sailing and fishing adventures, his John Deere and collection of tractors, and his beautiful granddaughters. An enthusiastic mower, he found great satisfaction in life’s simple pleasures and could always be found in his garage or barn fixing something.  

John shared 50 wonderful years of marriage with his “lovely bride”, Joanne Bray, whom he met in the Florida Keys. Together they built a life filled with adventure, hard work, and a deep devotion to their family. In retirement, they moved to North Carolina's High Country to be closer to their children and grandchildren, a decision that brought them great joy. 

Above all, John was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Joanne; his son, Matthew Bray and wife Heather; his daughter, Emily Rood and husband Daniel; and his cherished granddaughters; Hannah, Byrdie, and Caroline. His family was the center of his life, and he took great pride in each of them. 

To honor his wishes, the family will hold a private Celebration of Life. 

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the SECU Family House of Winston-Salem, which provides affordable lodging and support for patients and families receiving medical care away from home.
