Hillie Bynum Shook

Hillie Bynum Shook, age 71, of Newland, passed away Sunday, September 24, 2023.
He was a native of Avery County and the son of the late Everett and Lucille Hodges Shook.

Hillie, as he was known to people “off” the mountain, and Bynum as he was known to people on the mountain, worked in the Avery County Courthouse since 2009. Prior to this, Hillie worked at Coats American, in Marion, for 32 years.

He was a workaholic. He was a goofy jokester who loved all children and his family. Hillie was a master gardener, whether it be his many flower beds or his vegetable gardens. He enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables and was also a quilter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Paul Everett Shook, and a grandson, Ricky Everett.

He is survived by his wife, Christine Shook of the home, one daughter, Jody Shook Brackett and husband John, Jr. of Rutherfordton; two sons, Richard Kemper Shook and wife Lele of Newton, and Bynum Jordan Shook and wife Jessica of Drexel; two sisters, Lois Strickland and husband Bob of Greensboro, and Rachel Hoilman and husband Wayne of Plumtree.
Grandchildren, Rosa Jodee Shook, Asia Shook, Skyela Shook, Rainee Shook, Aaliyah Long, Kenji Vue, Toudan Vue, Chris Cornodo, Daliyah Foster, Zakori Bentley, Kailyn Bentley, Ava Jordan Shook, and Skylar Bentley.
One great granddaughter, Cash Foster.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, September 27, 2023 at 2 p.m. in Emmanuel Baptist Church, Newland. Burial will follow in White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery, Banner Elk.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., prior to the services, in the church.
