Dallas Henderson Cheek, aged 75, passed away peacefully at home on November 4, 2024. He was born in Elkin NC on August 1, 1949, the son of Mary Ruth Golden Cheek and Ralph Cheek.
He is survived by his wife, Carole M. Cheek, sons Jonathan of Tempe, Arizona, and Peter of DaNang, Viet Nam, and granddaughter Madeline of Tempe, Arizona. He is also survived by a sister and her husband, Leanne and Daniel Walser of Lincolnton, NC.
Dallas had a long successful career teaching at The College of New Jersey after recieving degrees from Wake Forest University, Appalachian State University, and Texas A&M University. His many students remember him as articulate, knowledgeable, witty, and opinionated, but always ready with a joke or anecdote to keep them engaged. He loved to challenge them with alternate ideas which departed from the status quo and which would generate heated discussion. He was an accomplished artist with a natural talent and he enjoyed painting people’s pets as well as creating copies of the great masters. He and Carole retired to Boone in 2014 after living in various places in the US as well as a number of years teaching in Germany.
Dallas was a member of First Baptist Church of Boone, NC, probably the only “Aggie” in the congregation. He was a loving faithful husband and father and he is greatly missed by his family.
His celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church, December 17, 2024, at 2:00, with the Reverend Roy Dobyns conducting the service, and dear friends, the Reverends Ryan and Lisa Kraus participating.
