Anthony Reed Hagler passed on to his eternal reward on Thursday, August 27. Tony was born on June 19, 1952 in Boone, North Carolina to the late Robert Hagler Jr and Kathryn Wilson. Tony was the last born into a family with 5 other siblings, John, Roberta, Sandra, Louise and Mary. He became the much-adored baby brother of the entire family.
Tony began his education at the Watauga Consolidated Schools before transferring Watauga County Public Schools. Tony graduated from Watauga High School where he was extremely popular and served on the Yearbook staff. After graduation, Tony joined the Army and became a Military Police officer during the early 1970s during the Vietnam War.
Tony became the proud father of a daughter, Seanté Bradford (Grimes) in 1972. He was remembered as saying of all the things I did in my youth, Seanté is the one I am most proud of.
After leaving the military, Tony tried his hand at various trades. Tony loved to cook and became an incredible chef. He found employment in some of Watauga County’s best restaurants. Tony was also employed by ProRehab of Boone but found his true calling caring for family. Tony became a caretaker for his sister and an afterschool caretaker for many of his nieces and nephews.
Tony loved learning. He used his VA Bill to obtain a degree from Appalachian State University in Interdisciplinary Studies. A proud, App State alum, Tony never missed an App State Football game, especially those on TV.
Tony is survived by his daughter, Seanté Bradford (Grimes) and his much-beloved granddaughter, Sarah of Newton, NC. He is also survived by a special friend, Kathy Kampher for whom he had a great love. He is also survived by one sister, Roberta Jackson of Boone, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Military Graveside services will be held on Sunday, September 13 at 2pm at the Clarissa Hill Cemetery officiated by Pastor Mike Mathes of the Boone Mennonite Brethren Church. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Boone Mennonite Brethren Church; PO Box 3590; Boone, NC 28607.
