Mrs. Virginia Overman “Ginny” Greene, age 91, of Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, and a former resident of Deep Gap, died Sunday morning, March 14, 2010 at Glenbridge Heath Care & Rehab. Born June 21, 1918 in Middlesex, North Carolina, she was a daughter of the late John C and Maude Estridge Overman. Mrs. Greene was educated at Campbell College, Barton College and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. She was an educator for 45 years, teaching English in Sampson County, Campbell University. Mrs. Greene taught in the Wilkes County School System for over twenty years, working at West Wilkes and Wilkes Central. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 1959. A member of the NEA, NCAE, President of the Golden Key Club at Campbell University, and was a finalist in the NC Teacher of the Year in 1983. Mrs. Greene was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, President of the Women of ELCA, and Chair of the Social Ministry. She organized a Sunday School Class in 1957 which is still active. In the 1960 & 1970’s she along with her husband owned and operated two popular businesses in Watauga County, the Hereford Barn and The Brownwood Lodge.
Surviving are one son; Alex Greene and wife Mary of Alpharetta, Georgia, one foster son; Buck Wellborn and wife Judy of Boone, one grandson; Samuel Greene of Alpharetta, Georgia, one sister; Frances Wilson of Bath, North Carolina and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray Lee Greene, her parents; John C. and Maude Estridge Overman, three sisters; Pauline Morgan, Lelia Overman and Mary Helen Strickland and two brothers; J. C. Overman, Jr., and Joseph E. Overman.
Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Greene will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Grace Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Pastor Sarah Bolick Lang. Burial will follow in Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon one hour prior to the service from 1 until 2 o’clock at Grace Lutheran Church.
